RESOLUTION ON COLOMBIA

The International Association of People’s Lawyers met in Doorn, The Netherlands, from December 8 to 10, 2000, and after analyzing the situation of injustice and violence that is happening in Colombia, we resolve to:

  1. Call upon the Colombian government to provide all the legal and social guarantees to the lawyer Alexander Lopez M and to the Sintra Emcali organization, to the effects of preserving their human rights as well as to the other social leaders and trade unionists that today struggle in this country for peace and social justice for the peoples of Colombia.

  2. The International Association of People’s Lawyers will denounce and confront the human rights violations in Colombia that have been committed daily under the auspices of the Colombian government against human rights defenders and especially against trade union and social leaders.

At the same time we call on the Congress of Colombia so that it can destroy the process of privitization of the Empresas Municipado de Cali Emcali, by considering this company to be a Colombian patrimony and to promote the social well being for the poorest of the region.
