IAPL demands immediate release of U.S. Atty. Peter Erlinder PDF Print Email

The International Association of People’s LawyPeter Erlinderers (IAPL), an organization of human rights lawyers committed to the protection and advancement of the basic rights of peoples throughout the world, is deeply concerned about the arrest of Peter Erlinder, a law professor and attorney, in Kigali, Rwanda on May 28.

Throughout his career, Peter Erlinder has been in court on many cases involving systematic people’s rights violations, defending progressive activists in countries like Peru and United States. He arrived in Rwanda on May 23 to take part in the defense of Victoire Ingabire Umuhoza, opposition leader who was arrested for "genocide denial" and then released on bail in April. Currently, however, Atty. Erlinder himself is charged with “genocide denial.”

IAPL recognizes the relevant reputation of Atty. Erlinder in Human Rights and anti-genocide defense, and is convinced that this is a clear attempt of Rwanda’s government to silence dissent, without any clear and concrete evidence against him.

In this sense, Atty. Erlinder’s arrest is a gross violation of the exercise of the legal profession, based on the United Nations 1990 Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers (articles 5, 6, 7, 8, 16 and 18), and UN 1998 Declaration on Human Rights Defenders (articles 9 and 11).

IAPL is concerned about Atty. Erlinder’s health, as he was taken to the hospital after several interrogation sessions. The Rwandan government claims that he attempted suicide. His family, however, believes that his life is in danger due to maltreatment while under arrest.

IAPL condemns all epic tragedies upon African peoples brought by imperialist interests. IAPL shall remain a supporter of peoples' struggle for a genuine social and national liberation throughout the world.

IAPL expresses solidarity with the National Lawyers Guild (NLG), to which Peter Erlinder had served as president, and joins other organizations in their international effort to expose Peter Erlinder’s arrest and demand his release and the protection for his life.

Furthermore, IAPL demands that the Rwandan government respect the right to exercise the legal profession, especially of human rights defenders.

Edre Olalia,
IAPL President
